Modern RTS games have no equivalent: The Cardassian Interface in Star Trek – Armada II

The Cardassian race in the Star Trek series made its appearance on the overly idealistic Star Trek: The Next Generation and represented a new foe for the Federation. They were a mix of Klingon and Romulan and they were militaristic but also had an artistic side to them which made unique. Unlike most of the Science-Fiction stories made now, Star Trek was good at making races that were not too alien but alien enough to create a futuristic version of real-life politics. The Cardassians would reach their peak of influence on the franchise in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The series would show them as the tragic villains being manipulated by the Dominion and cause the fall of the great civilization due to the arrogance and corruption of the military classes.

Much like Star Wars, the Cardassians would have distinct style and feel to their ships. Just as the Neimoidian in the Phantom Menace would hide in their ships with mighty droid armies marching on Naboo, the Cardassians had their own approach to how they built their ships and the interfaces on them.

Star Trek – Armada II incorporates Cardassian lore into the game with such stylistic beauty that you could hardly believe that this game is over 20 years of age. Once you think about it, you become nostalgic and wonder how the Video Game industry has become stuck in the mud. It cares more about past glories and not building anything new or even respecting its past without covering it over with a facade which is inferior to the original product that gamers enjoyed in those previous generations.

The Cardassians were introduced in Star Trek – Armada II and they are quite a joy to play.

However, the main I want to emphasize here is the sound design of the interface.

In video games, the interface can make a break even a good game.

The sound design within the clicking of the keys and hovering over the interface is integral to a building a wonderful experience for the player to get immersed in.

The interface sounds of the Cardassians is very oppressive sounding, as if the Obsidian Order is watching your shoulders.

In 2001, only a couple years separated Star Trek – Armada II and the release of Dune II, the first true RTS game. Star Trek Armada II in many ways was released at the pinnacle of the RTS genre. Empire Earth was released in the same month as Star Trek Armada II. Warcraft III, was released earlier in that year, giving Blizzard the confidence to then unleash World of Warcraft onto the MMO genre and then seize it like ancient conqueror. These are only three of the any RTS games released in that year.

What is even more remarkable is that Star Trek – Armada II was released a year after Star Trek – Armada in 2000. The sounds on the interface in the OG Armada were more basic. Within a year, they managed to have unique sounds and art style for each race; they did not just copy the original game, they made something new while respecting the OG Armada.

Such an accomplishment goes beyond the brand of this science-fiction franchise but shows what the video game industry needs to reclaim so that people can enjoy video games with passion once again.

Why Empire Earth: The Art of Conquest’s Space Era is still worth playing today

The Original Empire Earth came out in a time when expansion packs were still packaged in boxes. The cover of the Art of Conquest expansion features a Roman legionary, probably a centurion in his armor.

Inside the game, there was inclusion of a strange aspect to the game known as the Space Age.

In this screenshot above, you can see the stars in the background, beyond the Space Age tower.

It is quite apparent that the developers were ambitious with this expansion. Whereas they could have spent the time putting more focus on fleshing out the various civilizations in the game, they spent it on adding an entirely new part to the game, namely space.

In some sense, it is clear Empire Earth’s engine just wasn’t up to the task of rendering space.

When one looks at the planets in Empire Earth, they look like floating pieces rock in some High Fantasy story that have been transferred onto the great vastness of space. In my opinion, it looks out of place here

Space in Empire is similar to water but there is a big distinction here. There are no resources available in space. Everything that you need has to be on the land parts of the map. This means that space is merely just a physical barrier, which separates you and your opponents.

The walls in the Space Age get an upgrade. In this age, they shimmer like force fields in Star Wars. Stylistically, they are not as imposing as the Laser Walls that appear in the Digital Age.

The Clunky nature of playing a 2002 game

I remember playing Empire Earth in 2002. I did not touch the expansion at that time.

Now that I am playing it with having more 20 years of foresight, I can see how old software is having issues playing on what would seem like a supercomputer in those early Aughts.

In the game that I was playing, the game was running slow as various robotic citizens were being added to my planet. It was clear that the game was not optimized properly for modern computers.

GOG.com has done a great service for bringing older games back onto the computers of gamers.

What makes it exciting is that clunky integration of space and land into the game.

Empire Earth in its futuristic ages has something that the sequel does not have; it simply seems more holistic.

In some sense, I can understand why Empire Earth is still more popular than the sequel. That ability to build move units and build buildings wherever you want is important aspect of the game.

As I play the Space Age of Empire Earth: The Art of Conquest, I reminded of how games were once affordable and were actually worth the time and money you spent on them. That is why Empire Earth still holds a speical place in my gaming catalog.

Sometimes, a bit of clunkiness goes a long way to building character.

Empire Earth vs Empire Earth 2: Two Games of Contrast

Empire Earth and its sequel are a study in contrasts. There are two games that represent differing ideas about what a game is. Empire Earth attempts to represent the classic RTS genre while Empire Earth 2 is attempting to chase after a new audience while being able to please the fans.

Empire Earth is about tactics and free form in its nature. It is a game that allows you build buildings anywhere.

Empire Earth 2 is more about strategic thinking and planning. The game integrates Civilization style scale with the RTS style.

Which game is better here?

Empire Earth at this point in time has remained the more popular of the two. On YouTube, Empire Earth 2 is largely obscure, only going due to the efforts of a few users.

Empire Earth however retains a thriving multiplayer scene. While not as lively as it once was in the past, there are significant number of players who enjoy it.

What is the reason for Empire Earth 2 being more obscure now? I believe it has to do with the overcomplication of the game.

Sometimes reinventing the wheel can be exciting but you are wasting money while your rivals are using tried and true technology which works now.

Empire Earth 2 attempts to put the Civilization series onto the structure of a RTS game.

Empire Earth knew what it was. The main selling point was the movement through history. That is what mattered to the players.

Empire Earth 2 was too much of a leap and Empire Earth was the comfy home which had the warm cookies made by your mom.

Many video games struggle with this. How much change should a game have? Sometimes its best to refine than to create something from scratch.

Empire Earth’s longevity as a game is a testament to the excellent structure and gameplay. It truly is a game that means what it says: Epic is too small a word.

The wide as an ocean and shallow as puddle worked just right for Empire Earth. That is why players continue to play and enjoy it.
