Netflix has too many reality tv shows in 2025.

Netflix is making so many reality shows that it is ruining the platform. While people may claim that Netflix is better than the old cable tv channels, the platform seems destined to be taking up the same content that made people want to leave cable in the first place.

Netflix has spent so much money on these shows that the home page, no matter what choices that you make is filled with Too Hot To Handle and Love is Blind. Not only that, but Netflix has making more country specific reality tv shows and it is only starting to fill the entire platform with more slop which is making the site unusable. A decade ago, Netflix had some original programming but it had a much larger library. There were shows from the studios as well as the small but growing catalog made within Netflix.

Now?

It is like a desert in comparison to Netflix of 10 or 20 years ago.

While Netflix did not have streaming services yet, its online catalog was in the area of around 30,000 to 40,000 movies and tv shows 20 years ago. 10 years later in 2015, the catalog of physical movies included Blu-Rays as well and was around 80,000 to 90,000 movies. The catalog is much smaller now and we can clearly see the results of what that means. It means that Netflix is churning out low quality entertainment(slop) in order to prop up the platform. For now, it is working here as Netflix is now putting ads on its cheapest subscription along with having increasing subscriber counts in countries outside of America.

Netflix’s originals are also taking much longer than in the past to make. Stranger Things has been on Netflix since 2016, yet the show has sporadically been on television. The series came online when Netflix was starting to pump out many more originals to replace the licensed shows that were being taken off the platform by the studios and put on their own streaming services.

Reality TV shows allow Netflix to have predicable seasons just like on old TV channels. However, they are not really shows that have any artistry but are there just to prop up its catalog. They are cheap to make and reliable. However, they are a sign that Netflix has sold its soul out for quick and cheap cash.

Netflix in its earlier years, before the subscriber counts broke over a million, had more movies in its catalog than now. While you had to wait to get a DVD and then later Blu-Rays in the mail, you had choices and wasn’t reliant on their originals.

This is why Netflix was better in the past. Delayed gratification is better than instant gratification. That people are spending minutes scrolling through the menu looking for what they want to watch is a clear sign that Netflix simply wants to keep people on the platform and not accomplish anything of note. There is no grandness to their vision, just profits. Studios of the past cared about profits, but they created stars who were avatars of their respective nations.

What is Netflix now but simply a money scheme for the streaming elites? Is there any sense of care for art or beauty anymore?

Netflix will realize that churning out reality tv show will not help the site in the long run. Another streaming service will come about, and it will create competition. That competition is what Netflix needs to return to its roots and give people choices.

Why is Netflix making so many Reality TV shows?

Woman Streamer

Netflix is the king of streaming or even content now. I have seen it grow from a big company into an even bigger company that now seems to have Hollywood as a vassal state which would have been seen unthinkable in the 2000s. Netflix was profitable in the 2000s and was causing huge amounts of chaos at Blockbuster but it was still in that niche of being a rental place, not a studio making its own stories.

Fast forward to now, Netflix would be home to Douglas Fairbanks had it been a studio in the Silent Era before the release of the Jazz Singer.

Netflix rules filmed content in a similar way to the big studios from the 1920s to the 1950s. They were incredibly powerful institutions, nations within America with their own culture and hiearchies. They brought the faces of amazing actors to the screens.

What is Netflix great goal here?

Netflix is not Hollywood, at least in the sense of how we once understood it. Netflix is a fusion of both Television and Cinema. It is the true HBO in the sense of that label the old Cable TV channel uses. The Home Box Office is what Netflix truly is now. It is more of a box office than HBO was in the early 1980s.

However, can it truly live up to such a title?

Netflix is making show after show about young people in pods who date someone on the other side of that pod without even seeing them. This is the Love is Blind series. Its based on the axiom: Love is Blind. This axiom governs the show’s production. It is an interesting premise for sure, ignoring the Bachelor or Bachelorette shows, which have tons of in-person drama between the characters. Love is Blind does not have any of that here. It is about romance behind a hidden screen.

However, they are making equivalent shows for many other nations. Even Italy is getting a show now.

Netflix has been making more reality tv shows than ever before?

Why?

The simple reason: Cost.

Netflix was making alot of content in the years before the pandemic. However, in this age?

Netflix is basically becoming basic television again.

Netflix’s Ransom Canyon 2025 Impressions

Ransom Canyon is an intriguing Western style Romance series in the style of Yellowstone. As a suburban man, I have no relationship with this world that is depicted on screen. However, I find the series to be very interesting to watch. It is an entrance into a world that I have little experience with and yet it feels like home.

The story was called by some of the access media as being too pedestrian. These kind of complaints are why so many critics are out of touch with the American public. Ransom Canyon is part of America that isn’t on the headlines. The place, which is located near the West Texas city of Lubbock is dominated by the ranching industry.

While many Americans may believe that their food is put into cans, these people are responsible for one part of it, the beginning parts of bring it to your table. In the area of Ransom Canyon, ranching is an important part of the series. Unlike many series on Netflix which focus on Upper Middle Class professions, the people here seem more authentic to me.

Some people say that the acting isn’t very satisfying here.

On this issue, I think that the acting is not as annoying as people say it is. As a fan of Classic Hollywood, I understand that the days of overacting are not in vogue. People seem to want realistic characters with a touch of larger than life here.

What is important is the vistas and the atmosphere. The story is intriguing but what’s more important is that it doesn’t take place in an area I have seen before.

What we get in Ransom Canyon is a story about a place where ranching is still very important. This is not Severance which while interesting in concept, is not a show that has much to say about anything in my opinion. This is a show about ordinary people in rural areas of Texas.

I have only watched one episode but it has taken my attention.

While some say that it is just background noise, I disagree.

Someone had to put effort into this. Watching with some attention is worth it.

Netflix should produce more series in this style.
